Lance Hopkins, professor of marketing practice in the College of Business, credits Hurricane Katrina for his career move to higher education. Prior to fall 2005, Hopkins worked in advertising and as director of marketing at Harrah’s casino in New Orleans. Katrina led him to reevaluate how he wanted to spend the remainder of his professional career.
First, he worked with Foundation Hope in Hancock County and helped put more than 100 families back into their homes. Hopkins then had the opportunity to teach casino marketing, advertising and public relations courses for Tulane University. He discovered that he really liked teaching and he began as an adjunct instructor at USM three years ago, then moved to full-time faculty this year. Hopkins says that he enjoys the diversity of the Gulf Coast students and the small college environment at Gulf Park.
The Chicago native follows the Chicago Cubs baseball team, as well as all Southern Miss teams and the New Orleans Saints.
