LAURA JOHNSON, an instructional assistant at the Southern Miss Autism Project, found a job that combines two things she loves — working with children and being back home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As an instructional assistant, Laura helps Autism Project staff members and instructors throughout the day while working with students in their daily activities.
Always wanting to return to the Gulf Coast, Laura initially left to further her education. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of South Alabama and her master’s degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia in human development and family studies with a concentration in child life.
She completed an internship in Chicago, and upon returning home to Gulfport, found a job opportunity at the university’s Autism Project. Working at the Autism Project since April, Laura says the most rewarding part of her job is working with the children and seeing their progress since she first started at the university.
As a certified child life specialist, Laura continues her work with children as a volunteer in local hospitals. She enjoys traveling and exploring different locations, as well as spending time with family and friends.
